Bern, Switzerland:
Pia Sundhage will step down as the Switzerland women’s football coach, ending her term after a historic Euro 2025 quarterfinal finish. The Swiss Football Association (SFA) confirmed that her contract, which expires in December, will not be renewed.
Sundhage, one of football’s most respected coaches, helped the Swiss team reach new heights. Her leadership guided Switzerland to their first-ever knockout stage in a European Championship. The team’s performance won hearts across the nation and inspired a new wave of fans.
“I would have loved to continue this journey,” Sundhage said. “I am surprised by the decision, but I respect it.”
A Career of Global Success
Before joining Switzerland, Pia Sundhage had already built an impressive legacy. She led the United States women’s team to two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup final. She also managed Sweden and Brazil, bringing her experience and passion to every role.
Her arrival in Switzerland in 2023 added energy to the squad. Players often described her as motivating and approachable. She focused on teamwork and discipline, turning the Swiss women’s team into strong competitors on the European stage.
Euro 2025: Switzerland’s Best Run Ever
At Euro 2025, Switzerland entered as underdogs. Yet, under Sundhage’s coaching, they advanced to the quarterfinals — a milestone in Swiss football. Their journey thrilled fans and boosted national pride.
Sundhage’s tactics focused on creativity, balance, and smart pressing. She gave young players a chance to shine, blending them with experienced leaders. Even though they missed a semifinal spot, the tournament marked a turning point for women’s football in the country.
Swiss FA’s Next Steps
Despite the success, the SFA decided not to extend her contract. Officials met Sundhage in Stockholm, her hometown, to share the decision. According to SFA President Peter Knäbel, the move is part of a plan to reshape the structure of women’s football in Switzerland.
“We thank Pia for leading the team through an unforgettable Euro campaign,” Knäbel said.
The SFA has appointed former Arsenal defender Johan Djourou as technical director of national teams. Djourou, who worked with Sundhage during Euro 2025, will now guide both men’s and women’s programs.
A Lasting Legacy
Sundhage’s time with Switzerland may be short, but her impact will last. She changed the way the team trained, communicated, and believed in themselves. Her leadership helped players grow in confidence and unity.
As Switzerland prepares for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, her foundation will continue to guide the team. Fans will remember her for more than just wins — she brought hope and global attention to Swiss women’s football.
For now, the football world watches where Pia Sundhage will go next. Her passion for the game and ability to turn teams into champions remain unmatched.
