Barcelona are one of Europe’s most well-known football clubs. They have a rich history in the UEFA Champions League. However, much of their success came during the Lionel Messi era. He played a major role in four of their five European titles. Since his exit, the club has struggled to reach the same level.
As the 2024/25 season ends with another setback, here is a clear look at Barcelona’s last Champions League win and their overall record in Europe.
Barcelona’s Most Recent Champions League Title: 2015
Barcelona last won the Champions League in 2015. In that final, they defeated Juventus 3–1. The front three of Messi, Suárez, and Neymar were at their peak and played a huge part in the victory. It was also Messi’s fourth Champions League trophy.
Since then, Barcelona have not reached another final. Their closest attempts came in two seasons:
- 2018/19: They reached the semifinals but lost to Liverpool in a dramatic comeback.
- 2024/25: They made the semifinals again but were beaten by Inter in a 7–6 thriller.
How Many Champions League Titles Does Barcelona Have?
Barcelona have won five Champions League titles. This number places them fifth on the all-time list. They sit behind Real Madrid, AC Milan, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich.
Here are all five of their European wins:
1991/92 — Barcelona’s First European Title
Final: Barcelona 1–0 Sampdoria (AET), Wembley
Key moment: Ronald Koeman scored a free-kick in extra time.
Barcelona had a tough start that season. They barely made it past Kaiserslautern in the early rounds. Even so, they topped their group and reached the final. Koeman’s late goal gave them their first European crown.
2005/06 — Ronaldinho Leads Barcelona to Glory
Final: Barcelona 2–1 Arsenal, Stade de France
Goal scorers: Eto’o, Belletti
Barcelona topped their group with ease. Then they beat Chelsea, Benfica, and AC Milan. In the final, Arsenal scored first, even after a red card. But Barcelona came back and won. A young Lionel Messi earned his first Champions League medal. However, an injury kept him out of the final matches.
2008/09 — Messi Shines on the European Stage
Final: Barcelona 2–0 Manchester United, Rome
Goal scorers: Eto’o, Messi
Messi won the Golden Boot with nine goals that season. Barcelona beat Lyon and Bayern Munich with big scorelines. In the semifinal, Andrés Iniesta scored a last-minute goal at Stamford Bridge to send them through. Messi then sealed the final with a rare header.
2010/11 — Guardiola’s Barcelona at Their Best
Final: Barcelona 3–1 Manchester United, Wembley
Goal scorers: Pedro, Messi, Villa
Two years later, Barcelona met Manchester United again. This time, they delivered one of the most complete final performances in Champions League history. Messi scored an important second-half goal, helping the team secure their fourth title.
2014/15 — The Famous MSN Trio Takes Over Europe
Final: Barcelona 3–1 Juventus, Berlin
Goal scorers: Rakitic, Suárez, Neymar
The 2014/15 team was one of Barcelona’s strongest ever. Messi finished the tournament with 10 goals and four key assists. The MSN trio dominated throughout the season, and their teamwork helped Barcelona win their fifth—and most recent—Champions League title.
A Decade Without Messi and Without European Success
Barcelona have not lifted the Champions League trophy since 2015. Their rebuild after Messi’s departure has been slow and challenging. As a result, they have struggled to keep up with Europe’s top clubs.
Even so, fans hope that Barcelona’s new generation of players will bring the club back to the top of European football.
