UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly extended full support to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after a highly charged confrontation with Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
During a meeting at 10 Downing Street, Starmer greeted Zelenskyy warmly, assuring him that the UK stands firmly with Ukraine. Starmer emphasized that the UK’s government and people support Ukraine “for as long as it may take” in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of U.S. backing in any future peace agreement for Ukraine, adding that for peace guarantees to be effective, they must include European security elements and a U.S. backstop. Starmer said, “A lasting peace for Ukraine must include a strong Ukraine, European security guarantees, and U.S. support.”
Zelenskyy, who is visiting the UK ahead of a European summit, also expressed his gratitude for the UK’s commitment. He spoke positively of the 100-year partnership between the UK and Ukraine, which was signed earlier this year, strengthening their relationship.
The UK has already provided financial support to Ukraine, including a £2.26 billion loan to bolster its defense capabilities. This financial aid is secured against frozen Russian assets, reflecting the UK’s commitment to holding Russia accountable for its invasion.
As European leaders prepare for a summit in Brussels, Starmer’s leadership will play a key role in uniting Europe and ensuring that Ukraine’s security remains a top priority in the face of escalating tensions with Russia.
