Trump Signals Potential U.K.-U.S. Trade Deal Without Tariffs Amid Ongoing Talks

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Donald Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted that the United Kingdom could strike a trade deal with the U.S. without facing tariffs, following talks with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The two leaders discussed a range of topics, including trade relations, defense spending, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

During a joint press conference, Trump praised Starmer for his efforts in trade negotiations, noting that the U.K. could avoid tariffs through a fair and balanced deal. Although specifics remain unclear, Trump emphasized the likelihood of an agreement soon.

This signals a shift from Trump’s previous stance, which involved imposing tariffs on other nations. He had previously announced plans to increase tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada in March 2025.

The meeting also saw discussions on the U.K.’s increased defense spending, which aligns with Trump’s demand for Europe to contribute more to global security efforts. Starmer also highlighted ongoing discussions about finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, with hopes for a ceasefire agreement in the near future.

As part of broader economic cooperation, Trump mentioned an upcoming deal with Ukraine, involving rare earth minerals, oil, and gas development, strengthening U.S.-Ukraine ties.

While the future of U.K.-U.S. trade remains in flux, the discussions between Trump and Starmer mark a significant moment in international trade relations, with both sides expressing a desire to avoid further tariff escalation.
