Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán blocked a joint EU statement supporting Ukraine during a crucial EU summit in Brussels, leaving Hungary isolated from the rest of the bloc, according to European Council President António Costa.
“Hungary is isolated,” Costa said after the meeting. “We respect Hungary’s position, but it’s one out of 27. And 26 are more than one.”
The blocked statement was meant to reaffirm the European Union’s commitment to Ukraine, including military support and security guarantees. However, Orbán objected, aligning his position with former US President Donald Trump’s peace efforts and arguing the EU’s support for Kyiv is excessive without long-term US involvement.
EU Moves Forward Without Hungary
Despite Hungary’s veto, 26 EU countries approved a separate declaration backing Ukraine’s defense and promising continued support. Leaders prioritized showing unity and strength in response to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, who initially expressed doubts, agreed to the statement after the EU addressed concerns about his country’s energy disputes with Ukraine.
Zelenskyy Thanks EU, Orbán Defends Position
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the summit and thanked the EU for standing by Ukraine during a critical time. He confirmed that Ukrainian officials will meet with US representatives in Saudi Arabia to discuss future support and possible peace talks.
Meanwhile, Orbán rejected claims of isolation, stating:
“Hungary is not isolated. The European Union has isolated itself from the US, China, and Russia. Hungary maintains good relations with all.”
Orbán also criticized increased military and financial aid for Ukraine, warning it places too much burden on the EU, especially if the US reduces its involvement.
EU Leaders Reaffirm Support for Ukraine
Despite Hungary’s opposition, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the urgency of military support for Ukraine, especially as US aid faces delays.
The EU remains committed to helping Ukraine defend its sovereignty, with leaders pledging to maintain unity and continue pressure on Russia through sanctions and financial assistance.
