Canada Implements New Tariffs on U.S. Imports in Response to Trump’s Steel and Aluminum Taxes

Canada has unveiled a new round of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods worth $30 billion CAD (€19bn), escalating the trade tension with the United States following President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum. The tariffs, which took effect on March 12, 2025, include duties on U.S. products like computers, sports equipment, and water heaters, as well as steel and aluminum imports.

Canada’s Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc emphasized the government’s stance in defending its key industries. “We will not stand idly by while our iconic steel and aluminum industries are being unfairly targeted,” LeBlanc stated. These new tariffs come on top of the 25% counter-tariffs imposed earlier in March, aimed at protecting Canada’s economy and industries from the impact of Trump’s import taxes.

Trump’s Steel and Aluminum Tariffs Spark Global Trade Tensions

Trump’s tariffs, which were delayed by a month, came into effect on March 12 and raised aluminum tariffs from 10% to 25%. This move is part of a broader strategy to challenge international trade practices and protect U.S. manufacturing. In retaliation, countries like Canada, Mexico, China, and the European Union have introduced their own countermeasures.

In addition to the retaliatory tariffs from Canada, the European Union also announced countermeasures on March 12. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the EU would impose tariffs worth €26 billion on U.S. goods, including steel, aluminum, textiles, and agricultural products. These countermeasures are set to take effect in stages, starting April 1, 2025.

Canada Calls for Global Cooperation Against Tariffs

Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly is calling for European allies to unite against these trade measures. She urged European leaders to “work together to eliminate the tariffs and encourage Americans to put pressure on their elected officials.”

A Growing Global Trade War

The escalating trade conflict between the U.S. and its allies raises concerns about a broader global economic impact. As nations protect their industries, the global trade war seems poised to intensify, with the potential for even more tariffs and economic disruptions. Countries and businesses worldwide are closely monitoring these developments, as the fallout from these trade disputes could affect industries ranging from manufacturing to agriculture.
