Former Barcelona forward Bojan Krkic has returned to the club in a new role, helping develop the next generation of talent at the famous La Masia academy. Once labeled the “next Lionel Messi,” Bojan is now focused on supporting young players as they rise through Barcelona’s ranks.
At just 34 years old, Bojan has transitioned from player to mentor, now working as a football coordinator at FC Barcelona. His responsibilities include evaluating youth players, monitoring their progress, and providing guidance during challenges such as injuries and performance pressures.
“I made the decision to retire early and start a new journey in football,” Bojan told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Euro Leagues podcast. “At a big club like Barcelona, there’s a lot to do. I work with our young players, support them through difficult times, and help them find the right path.”
Bojan, who scored over 900 goals for Barcelona’s youth teams, made his first-team debut in 2007 at just 17 years old. His early success led to comparisons with Lionel Messi, but Bojan says his goal was always to be himself.
“I knew I wasn’t Messi. I was Bojan,” he explained. “But the expectations were difficult to manage. Living up to those comparisons was a challenge.”
Despite facing injuries and pressure during his career, Bojan is now using those experiences to help the next wave of Barcelona stars succeed. His role is crucial in preparing La Masia players for the realities of professional football, both on and off the field.
Barcelona remains committed to developing homegrown talent, and with Bojan’s support, the future of La Masia looks brighter than ever.
