Tesla’s UK Sales Soar 20% Amid Musk’s Political Controversy and Rising EV Competition

Tesla

Tesla saw a remarkable 20.7% increase in its UK sales year-on-year, despite growing unease among consumers over CEO Elon Musk’s increasing political involvement. In February 2025, Tesla sold nearly 4,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK, with the Model Y and Model 3 leading the charge, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The Model 3 saw 1,990 units sold, while the Model Y reached 1,861 units.

Despite these gains, Tesla is facing heightened competition from Chinese EV manufacturers like BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor, whose lower-priced vehicles with advanced technology are attracting more consumers.

Elon Musk’s Political Involvement Sparks Consumer Backlash

Tesla’s rise in the UK market comes amidst growing concerns over Musk’s political involvement. US President Donald Trump recently appointed Musk to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aims to modernize federal technology and reduce government spending. Additionally, Musk has voiced support for the German far-right, anti-immigration party, Alternative for Germany, which has led to a decline in Tesla’s sales in other European markets, particularly in Germany.

In contrast, total EV registrations in Germany surged 31% in February, but Tesla’s sales in the region plummeted 76% compared to the same month in 2024.

Rising EV Competition and Market Trends

As competition intensifies, Tesla faces challenges from Chinese rivals, offering highly advanced EV technology at competitive prices. In the UK, overall car registrations fell by 1% in February, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline. However, the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, with battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations up 41.7%, reaching 21,244 units.

Meanwhile, hybrid vehicle registrations saw a 7.9% increase, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles rose 19.3%, highlighting the growing demand for cleaner, greener alternatives to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.

Tesla’s Strategy in the Face of Rising Competition

Despite these challenges, Tesla’s sales growth in the UK indicates a solid demand for electric vehicles, particularly among buyers interested in the Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla’s strong performance in the UK, however, will likely face ongoing scrutiny due to the rising competition from more affordable EV options entering the market.
