Tensions Rise After Turkish Cup Derby
Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been accused of physically attacking Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk after a heated Turkish Cup match. The incident at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium has ignited debate in Turkish football.
The Incident
Galatasaray vice-president Metin Ozturk claims Mourinho first verbally confronted Buruk before physically attacking him. Video footage appears to show Mourinho pinching Buruk’s nose from behind, causing him to fall.
“Our manager Okan and Mourinho congratulated the referees. Then, Mourinho verbally and physically attacked him,” said Ozturk. “I believe Fenerbahce’s management should act before the federation does.”
Buruk’s Response
Buruk downplayed the incident, saying, “He pinched my nose from behind, leaving a slight scratch. It wasn’t classy, but I won’t exaggerate it.”
Rivalry and Previous Clashes
The Fenerbahce-Galatasaray rivalry intensified further, with multiple red cards issued during stoppage time. In February, Galatasaray accused Mourinho of making racist remarks, leading to a four-game ban and a £35,194 fine from the Turkish Football Federation. Mourinho has since filed a lawsuit against Galatasaray for defamation.
Awaiting Response
Fenerbahce has yet to comment on the accusations. As tensions rise, the incident could have lasting consequences for Mourinho’s future in Turkish football.
