Romania’s Central Electoral Committee (BEC) has suspended Calin Georgescu’s application to run for president, citing incomplete documentation regarding his campaign funding. The committee specifically pointed out that one required signature was missing from the submitted paperwork.
Georgescu, an ultranationalist candidate and controversial figure, has faced criticism for his alleged support of the Iron Guard, a fascist group banned under Romanian law. His candidacy had already been under scrutiny due to accusations of Russian influence in the December 2024 election, which led Romania’s constitutional court to annul the first round of voting.
Following the suspension, Georgescu condemned the decision, calling it a blow to democracy. He stated that if democracy in Romania falls, it will affect the entire democratic world. His supporters have taken to the streets of Bucharest, resulting in clashes with the police. A gendarme was injured during the protests, which included rock-throwing and the use of tear gas by authorities.
Georgescu now has the option to appeal the decision or submit a new candidacy application ahead of the presidential election rerun, which is scheduled for 4 May 2025.
