In a recent interview, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that his previous claim to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours was made “a little bit sarcastically.” The remark, which was a staple of his 2024 presidential campaign, was clarified ahead of a broadcast set for Sunday.
Trump explained, “What I really meant is I’d like to get it settled, and I think I’ll be successful.” This admission is unusual for Trump, who is known for making bold and often exaggerated statements. During the 2024 campaign, he said multiple times that he could end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia quickly, even suggesting a peace deal would be possible before taking office.
In May 2023, Trump stated at a CNN town hall, “I want them to stop dying. I’ll have that done in 24 hours.” He made similar comments during a debate in September 2023, claiming he could bring about a ceasefire between the warring parties.
Despite this clarification, Trump remains hopeful about reaching a peace agreement, expressing confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be open to talks. He noted, “I think he’s going to agree. I really do. I think I know him pretty well.”
Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently visited Moscow to discuss a temporary ceasefire, which Ukraine has reportedly accepted. However, Trump warned that if Putin does not agree, the consequences for the world would be severe, citing the ongoing loss of life.
While Trump’s diplomatic efforts continue, the path to peace remains unclear, and many questions about the future of the conflict remain unanswered.
