Ukrainian and US officials met in Riyadh

Ukrainian and US officials met in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 11, 2025, for productive talks aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The discussions focused on key issues such as energy security, with Ukraine committed to securing peace for both the country and Europe. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed the success of the talks, highlighting their focus on critical issues and reaffirming President Zelenskyy’s goal for a peaceful resolution.

Key Points from the Riyadh Talks

Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov led the delegation, which included Oleksandr Karasevych, State Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Pavlo Palisa, Ihor Zhovkva, and Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk. Umerov confirmed that the Ukrainian delegation would not be meeting with the Russian delegation in Riyadh, maintaining a firm diplomatic stance.

In a video address, President Zelenskyy praised the talks as “very productive,” urging continued international pressure on Russia to ensure a genuine ceasefire. The talks follow a similar meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where the US proposed a 30-day ceasefire and resumed military aid to Ukraine.

Russia’s Stance and Escalating Tensions

The talks come amid ongoing violence, with Ukraine accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of stalling ceasefire efforts. Despite a limited ceasefire agreement, Russian military offensives have increased. The upcoming meeting between US and Russian delegations adds another layer of complexity to the diplomatic efforts.

US Involvement and Hopes for Peace

Special Envoy Steve Witkoff led the US delegation, discussing the war’s broader implications and emphasizing the need to end the conflict. US President Donald Trump expressed cautious optimism, stating that the talks were “somewhat under control” and expressing hopes that the Riyadh discussions could lead to a breakthrough in the ongoing war.

A Crucial Moment for Peace in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

The Riyadh talks mark an important step toward achieving a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. With both US and Ukrainian officials pushing for a meaningful ceasefire, the international community remains hopeful that these talks will lead to long-term stability in the region.
